IUI (Intrauterine Insemination):
IUI, often referred to as artificial insemination, involves the introduction of washed and prepared sperm directly into the uterus. This procedure is often chosen when there are minor male fertility issues, such as low sperm count or mobility, or unexplained fertility issues in couples. The Process:- Sperm Preparation: The male partner's sperm sample is collected and processed to concentrate healthy and active sperm.
- Timing: The female partner's ovulation cycle is closely monitored. When it's the optimal time for conception, the prepared sperm is inserted into the uterus via a catheter.
- Increased Chance: IUI enhances the chances of fertilization by bringing the sperm closer to the egg, reducing the distance they need to travel.
- Mild male fertility issues
- Unexplained fertility challenges
- Cervical factor infertility
- Timed with ovulation cycles
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization):
IVF is a more intricate procedure involving the extraction of eggs and combining them with sperm in a laboratory setting. The resulting embryos are then placed back into the uterus. IVF is frequently used when there are more complex fertility issues or when IUI has not been successful. The Process:- Ovarian Stimulation: The female partner undergoes hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries and produce multiple eggs.
- Egg Retrieval: Mature eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a minimally invasive procedure.
- Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are combined with the male partner's sperm in a laboratory dish for fertilization.
- Embryo Culture: The resulting embryos are cultured and monitored for several days.
- Embryo Transfer: The best-quality embryos are selected and transferred into the uterus.
- Pregnancy Test: A pregnancy test is performed after about two weeks.
- Severe male fertility issues
- Tubal factor infertility
- Endometriosis
- Advanced maternal age
- Unsuccessful IUI attempts
- Choosing the Right Path
